Is the Metaverse Second Life with better graphics?
Let’s answer the question right away: No, the Metaverse isn’t Second Life with better graphics. Not exactly, anyway. If you look through newspapers published as far back as 30 years ago, you can find the phrase “Metaverse.” Not just in reviews of sci-fi author Neal Stephenson’s book Snow Crash, which coined the term in 1992, but in early experiments inventing an online environment that sounds exactly like, well, the Metaverse.
Read the following. You probably won’t be able to guess when it was written:
The Metaverse has a central business district, where [Texas entrepreneur Steve] Jackson hopes businesses will set up virtual offices. Wired [magazine] is building an office there that could take subscriptions or let readers gather to discuss stories … Metaverse visitors will be charged $10 for 80 hours a month.
The quote is from a Newsday article syndicated in newspapers nationwide in December 1993. It isn’t clear what happened to the project, but it evidently didn’t take off the way its creators anticipated.
BAYC-themed Bored&Hungry restaurant still accepts crypto
In the past few days, rumors have swirled in crypto Twitter that the NFT-backed restaurant Bored & Hungry will stop accepting cryptocurrencies as a form of payment. The restaurant’s owner Andy Nguyen said that this was, unequivocally, “fake news.”
Andy Nguyen opened Bored & Hungry in April 2022. The Bored Ape Yacht Club-themed 1,700-square-foot restaurant is located in Long Beach, California. Nguyen holds a Bored Ape #6184 and two Mutant Apes, which he uses for branding and marketing purposes.
HTC releases a Metaverse-focused smartphone Desire 22 Pro
Desire 22 Pro is HTC’s newest phone focused on AR, VR, and NFT functionality and it’s going up for pre-order this week. The pre-order price starts at around $450. The phone’s main functionality is to enable users to be part of Metaverse experiences by using their browsers to share and view digital art.
HTC is a Taiwanese electronics company that is confident in the Metaverse and is working towards developing its virtual world. The smartphone, a follow-up to 2021’s HTC Desire 21 Pro, is integrated with HTC’s open-source Metaverse called Viverse and can be paired with the Vive Flow VR headset, which is compatible with all Android phones.
Researchers use VR to study how chimps hunt for fruit
Yesterday, a Newsweek headline made an ominous claim about one of Web3’s favorite animals: “Chimpanzees Turn Ace Hunters in Virtual Reality Video Game Study.” There’s no need to take shelter — this isn’t a scenario for a prequel to Planet of the Apes – it’s about a recent scientific study exploring how chimps learn to find food between IRL and virtual reality. Turns out, they do exceptionally well.
Dr. Matthias Allritz and Dr. Josep Call from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of St. Andrews joined Dr. Francine Dolins at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in leading “the first empirical study of how chimpanzees navigate an open-field, naturalistic, virtual environment and demonstrate that chimpanzee maneuvers in the virtual world share several key features with real-life navigation,” according to a statement from St. Andrews. The Templeton World Charity Foundation supported their research.
🌎Back From NFT NYC And Beyond!
Back From NFT NYC And Beyond!
On the heels of our forays to VeeCon and the World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland, many folks on our team continued onward to DCentral and Consensus in Austin which also attracted participation from a global audience. Since three stops on a tour are hardly enough, we kept the momentum going and experienced some more incredible moments of community, collaboration, co-creation, plus a smidge of serendipity with a week in NYC, the big ‘ol Apple of NFT.
The week of June 20, the Edge of NFT and NFT LA team continued their tour of the vibrant web3 conference scene visiting New York City for the most recent iteration of the ever-growing NFT.NYC experience. We paid special attention to, as well as contributed to a number of satellite events, among a larger smattering on the order of hundreds! A global community of developers, entrepreneurs, artists, gamers, brands, enthusiasts, investors, and leaders in the space came together in New York. While 1500 community members spoke at the core event, conversations inside and outside the walls of NFT.NYC paved the development of genuine friendships and synergistic collaborations amongst a group of people that generally share optimism about the potential utility of NFTs for decades to come.
We had an amazing time at one of our partner events, the NFT BADDIE SUMMIT with incredible women in the web3 space. We recorded a number of interviews which have aired as a podcast episode. Our very own team member, Audrey Pichy joined a panel entitled: DTR in Web3: How to find the right web3 partner, alongside Taylor Star ( Marketing Strategist), Alejandra Corbell King (Crypto Babes), Melissa Henderson (Violet Verse) and Kas Vega (Feature/Huxley).
We partnered with SoHo Technique and We Dream to host an awesome VIP event across 5+ gallery spaces in SoHo. The AR art was inspiring and people had a wonderful time coming together to experience it and enjoy it. It offered us an imaginative digital world that can actually bring us together in the real world.
We also had a live podcast episode recording at one of the galleries on June 22nd. The episode featured Prakash Somosundram, CEO & Co-founder at EnjinStarter and was our very first livestreamed episode recording! The recording also featured a live appearance from Soho Johnny of SoHo Technique and Peter Calfee of WeDream.
A couple days later we cohosted another event: NFT SEA featuring the vibrant tech of South East Asia’s best projects. Edge of NFT Team also moderated a panel at the venue w/ former NBA star Baron Davis, @sobylife (co-founder of gaming studio Ex-Populus known for bringing Mike Tyson and OBJ into Crypto, as well as Prakash Somosundram.
At yet another event we partnered with Animoca Brands and brought together of their incredible “Frens and Family.” Animoca Brands brought a spirit of re-grouping, re-valuing, and getting ready to reach even higher. This event was a jam-packed rooftop soiree co-sponsored by Animoca Brands, Certik, and Antifund. The VIP event attracted an enthusiastic crowd of industry leaders exploring ways to work together and build the future of the Web3 space.
We partnered with MintBlack in giving our VIP attendees and sponsors an amazing Happy Hour with unlimited drinks and Hor D'oeuvres. Live Entertainment included a DJ, Live Artists, Musicians, and NFT 360 Booth, a Comedian host, Scavenger Hunts, Giveaways & more.
What else happened? Where do we begin? Ape Fest was at Pier 17. Mythical Games had an event w/ the Chainsmokers at the Glasshouse overlooking the bay. The Yellow Heart x Tao white party was also incredible with a staircase of “yellow heart” illuminated spring flowers. We walked the floors of the Exhibit Hall at the Marriott Marquis (the main venue for NFT NYC) and talked to people from Crypto.com, Arbitrum, Metalcore, Chromia, and more! We attended Infinite Object’s Pop-up gallery installation centered around Women Artists Worldwide. There was a special performance by Yung Raja, Forbes 30 under 30 breakout artist from Singapore, and a fun open bar w/ DJ @justinjayrose from GeoJam. This is hardly a full rundown of our experiences which had our crew catching up on sleep for days. We loved running into so many folks that attended NFT LA, many of whom met collaborators and even business partners while there and are pumped for us to take it to the next level in 2023.
On that note!! We officially made the announcement: NFT LA 2023 is happening March 20-23, 2023. We opened up our early bird white list (https://2023.nftla.live/). What a wonderful response that triggered, with lots of sign ups, and great feedback on NFT LA 2022. We heard from many excited would-be participants, including sponsors, creators, speakers, and attendees of the highest caliber.
Our TOP 4 key takeaways from the themes and events in NFT NYC:
Web3 and metaverse as well as institutional investment are coming into the space (future projects will be about metaverse and gaming and everybody else is integrating web3).
There will be a major paradigm shift towards achieving of ease of access and unlocking value. This will be a major consideration for future NFT projects. For an impressive example of what’s brewing checkout Magic Link. The remainder of 2022 and beyond will be focused on breakthroughs in utility, infrastructure, security, and authentication through wallets, custodial procedures, and tokenization of hard assets and experiences. This means that the space is still wide open for expansion and that is super cool!
Serious, hard-working people who are willing to endure a struggle or two and those who keep building their visions despite the market conditions will come out ahead in wonderful ways.
Ambitious builders are making inroads and exploring global collaboration opportunities. There’s room for much more of that though! More folks came from overseas to meet this year at NFT NYC, in large part due to fewer Covid restrictions. More events bridging borders will enable more rapid innovation and launches that attract a broader audience. And so, look out for a great opportunity for global collaboration at NFT LA 2023!
